Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world. It can only be sighted in a few places on our planet under guarantee. That’s exactly why you shouldn’t miss this snorkeling with whale sharks experience during your visit to the Yucatan Peninsula. Because we have here the best place in the world to snorkel with whale sharks.

The best period of the year for this adventure is from the beginning of June to the end of September. This is because the water is warmest in the Caribbean and therefore during this time we can observe probably the largest population of whale sharks in the world. Whale sharks are mysterious and normally solitary animals that follow the plankton currents of our planet. However, large aggregations of up to 300 animals are possible here.

Things to know about our “Snorkeling Whale Sharks Tour

Although the whale shark belongs to the shark family, it is absolutely harmless to us humans. Whale sharks filter the water through their 5 gills and thus take in enough food and oxygen. Like sharks, they date back to the time of the dinosaurs. Their history thus began more than 450 million years ago, long before land vertebrates existed.

Sharks and all ray species have a cartilaginous skeleton, unlike the rest of the fish species. Fish have a bony skeleton. An adult whale shark is about 10 meters long and weighs about 10 tons. Their entire body surface is covered with white dots. This feature can be compared to our fingerprints, because the arrangement of these dots is different for each individual animal. You may even notice this yourself while snorkeling with the whale sharks!

Unfortunately, the biggest enemy of the whale shark is man, which is why nowadays this is threatened with extinction. In order not to cause significant stress to the animals, diving with the animals is prohibited. We will always be at the surface to swim and snorkel with the giants.

To protect the whale sharks, we follow these rules when snorkeling:

The whale sharks may not be touched.
The max. Number per guide is 2 persons and up to 3 jumps per person are possible.
Photos and videos may generally only be taken without flash.

Our whale shark excursion starts early in the morning. You will be picked up directly at your hotel on the Riviera Maya and then you will go to Cancun. There our boat is already waiting for you, where there is room for 10 people. We head north and after passing Isla Contoy, we keep an eye out for the whale sharks and look forward to snorkeling!

The boats are equipped with all safety utensils. In addition to life jackets and snorkeling equipment, we have cold drinks and, for safety, medicines on board. When we find the perfect spot to swim with the animals, you jump into the water with our english speaking guide and a partner and the adventure begins. You will be able to follow the whale sharks with ease as they majestically glide slowly through the water. With a little luck you will also meet manta rays, turtles or dolphins.

After enjoying some time with the whale sharks, we continue towards Isla Mujeres or Isla Contoy. On one of the two islands you can relax after this experience and let the impressions work on you. Cool drinks and a snack are provided on the boat and you can just enjoy your stay! Completely relaxed we will make our way back to Cancun and of course we will bring you back directly to your hotel.

Booking

To confirm a booked tour, you will receive a confirmation email immediately after booking. Via our calendar you have an overview of which dates are available.

Down payment

For a binding booking we charge a deposit. The rest is then to be paid in cash on site. If you would like to request a tour without obligation, please contact us.

Cancellation conditions

It may happen that the excursion has to be cancelled due to bad weather (strong wind and waves). If the tour cannot be rescheduled to another date, we will of course refund the deposit paid. Unfortunately, we cannot pay for any other costs incurred. However, we will gladly make every effort to provide substitute services. We will also try to notify you of any cancellations as early as possible.

In the following situations the deposit will be refunded:

You cancel the tour at least 5 days before the start.
Cancellations less than 5 days before the start: If the excursion cannot be started for whatever reason, please contact us immediately. If we are able to allocate the seats elsewhere, we will check whether a refund is possible as a gesture of goodwill. In the worst case we have to charge the full price.

With the booking we note your contact details to be able to contact you in case of changes.

Transportation

Playa del Carmen, Punta Maroma, Akumal (until “Grand Bahia Principe”)

In this area we will pick you up directly at your hotel or accommodation for all our excursions. If you are staying in the hotel zone or the center of Tulum, a pick-up for the excursion “Sian Ka’an” is possible without any problems. For the excursion “Ek Balam” the pick up is also possible up to and including Tulum center. For all other tours we can pick you up in outlying areas for an additional fee.

Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Costa Mujeres

For the excursions “Swimming with whale sharks” and also “Catamaran Isla Mujeres” we will gladly pick you up at your hotel. For all other tours there is the possibility of pick up for an extra charge, alternatively we can arrange a meeting point in Playa del Carmen. Wir wollten schon immer mal einen Walhai sehen und durch diese Tour wurde uns der Wunsch erfüllt. Wir waren eine kleine Gruppe von 6 Personen + 3 Crew-Mitgliedern. Die Stimmung war entspannt, locker & sehr spaßig. Wir können diese Tour absolut empfehlen, auch ein großes dankeschön an unseren Guide Limbert.

Dieser Ausflug ist einfach nur rundherum Traumhaft !!!! Man muss aber seefest sein oder Tabletten nehmen (ich habe es gemacht und konnte alles genießen). Herzlichen Dank auch an Limbert unseren Guide. Er und das Team auf dem Boot haben uns super betreut.

Wir haben am 1.6.25 diese Tour gemacht, es war sehr beeindruckend, tolles Erlebnis, unser Guide wußte genau wann der richtige Zeitpunkt war um ins Wasser zu springen um genau über bzw. in der Nähe der Walhaie sind. Wunderbares Erlebnis. Auch die anschließende Schnorcheltour war
prima, der Guide hat uns die besten Stellen gezeigt. Kapitän und Guide haben dann ein super Snack zubereitet und uns sicher zurückgebracht. Ausflug kann man nur empfehlen. Von der deutschen Reisebegleitung hätte wir uns während der langen An- bzw. Abreise zum Ausflugsboot mehr Information über Land und Leute oder über Walhaie gewünscht. Sie hat sich nicht
einmal mit ihren Namen vorgestellt. Ich würde immer wieder den Ausflug mit den beeindruckenden Tieren machen, vielen Dank an Guide und Kapitän.

Es war eine wunderschöne Tour zu den Walhaien, sind 2x mit bzw. über den Walhaien geschnorchelt. War ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Der Guide wußte genau wann wir ins Wasser springen mussten um eine perfekte Sicht zu haben. Auch die anschließende Schnorcheltour war prima, er hat uns die besten Stellen am Riff gezeigt. Zum Schluss haben Käpten und Guide einen köstlichen Snack zubereitet und uns sicher zurückgebracht. Vielen Dank für alles. Von der deutschen Reiseleiterin, deren Namen wir nicht mal erfahren haben hätte ich während der langen Anfahrt zum Ausflugsboot mehr Info über Land und Leute und über Walhaie erwartet. Schade, deshalb nur 4 Sterne.

Wir haben 2018 schon Ausflüge mit diesem Anbieter gemacht. Natürlich dieses Jahr wieder gebucht. Waren zu den Walhaien gefahren(leider keine gesehen) und haben die Wasserschildkröten/ Cenotentour gemacht. Wieder alles sehr gut organisiert und für sehr gut befunden. Alles wirklich sehr gut erklärt und uns informiert über Land und Umgebung der Tierwelt. Vielen lieben Dank an Viktor(liebe Grüße an deinen Sohn) und Oto und den „alten“ Mann, den Wächter der Cenoto! Es waren unvergessliche Touren, wir kamen sehr glücklich von unseren Touren zurück! Ein Dankeschön von Herzen!
