Akumal is one of the few places on the Riviera Maya where snorkeling with turtles starts right at the beach. As a result, the conditions are close to ideal: clear water, calm currents and sea turtles within easy reach. They are protected in part by the work of the Centro Ecológico Akumal. This half-day trip pairs that morning in the sea with a cool break at Cenote Nohoch, and there is water and fresh fruit in between. The group never exceeds seven people.

First, the day begins with a short walk to Akumal beach, a quiet coastal village known for exactly this encounter. Equipped with mask and snorkel, you head into the crystal-clear water. With a little patience the first sea turtles appear, grazing calmly on the seabed and surfacing now and then for air. Because the bay is shallow and sheltered, you can watch them without fighting a current. Between coral and tropical fish, Akumal feels almost like a small open-air aquarium.

Instead of a long lunch there is only a light refreshment afterwards: cool water and fresh fruit. That may not sound like much. Still, it fits the day. Nobody wants a heavy stomach between the sea and the cenote. The break is therefore just long enough to recharge without breaking the rhythm of the morning.

After snorkeling with turtles in Akumal, the afternoon continues at Cenote Nohoch, one of the most impressive cenotes in the region. The water is crystal clear and pleasantly cool, framed by stalactites, roots and an almost reverent silence. Meanwhile, some guests snorkel between the rock formations, while others simply float or swim a few laps. After the saltwater of the morning this freshwater stop is a welcome change. For many it is also the calmest moment of the day.

The trip shows two completely different underwater worlds in a single day. In the morning, the sea offers turtles and reef; in the afternoon the cenote offers quiet and cool fresh water. Exactly that mix keeps the day compact and varied at the same time. If you want even more underwater time, our snorkeling tour in Playa del Carmen is the natural next step. Right from the beach in Akumal. The bay is shallow and sheltered, and the turtles there are protected in part by the Centro Ecológico Akumal.
Only a light refreshment: cool water and fresh fruit, so that nobody enters the cenote with a heavy stomach.
Above all, the water is crystal clear and pleasantly cool, and stalactites and roots frame the pool. After the saltwater of the morning, the change is very welcome.
Yes. You need no previous experience, because the currents are calm and the guide hands out mask, snorkel and a life vest. The group is limited to seven people.
