A Trip to Muyil and Mini Sian Kaan: A Day Among Ruins, Canals, and a Jungle River

Muyil is one of the quietest Mayan sites on the Riviera Maya and, at the same time, the gateway to one of Mexico’s most impressive nature reserves. This Muyil day trip combines ancient ruins in the heart of the jungle with a walk through the rainforest, a boat tour through the canals of Sian Kaan, the famous floating experience on the jungle river, and lunch in Tulum.

Arrival in Muyil

The ruins of Muyil, also known as Chunyaxché, are located not far from Tulum and are among the less crowded Maya sites in the region. Muyil was once an important trading center, inhabited from the 3rd century B.C. through the late Postclassic period. Amid dense jungle, visitors can explore well-preserved structures, most notably the approximately 17-meter-high El Castillo temple, which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. Because there are significantly fewer visitors here than at Chichén Itzá or Cobá, the trip feels more intimate and peaceful.

A Walk Through the Rainforest

A trail winds its way through dense jungle between the ruins of Muyil and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Giant trees, exotic plants, and the sounds of wildlife create a unique atmosphere. If you look closely, you can spot birds and butterflies, while informational signs along the trail provide insights into the area’s flora and fauna.

Boat Tour Through Sian Kaan

The boat tour through part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve begins at a small lagoon. This part of the Muyil tour takes about 45 minutes. It carries you through crystal-clear canals that were built by the Maya centuries ago and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amid calm waters and lush vegetation, the guide points out where birds, fish, turtles, and even crocodiles can be spotted along the way—a compact yet immersive nature experience right in the heart of Sian Kaan.

Floating on the Jungle River

A highlight in its own right is floating down the river that flows through the Muyil Lagoon. Wearing life jackets, you let the gentle current carry you through the mangroves, past dense vegetation and accompanied by the chirping of birds. This waterway, built by the Maya, connects the lagoon to the larger Sian Kaan canal system, making this part of the trip one of the most relaxing moments of the entire day.

Lunch in Tulum

To wrap up the day, we’ll head to Tulum for a traditional Mexican lunch featuring fresh tacos, succulent carnitas, or spicy al pastor, served with a variety of salsas.
