Isla Mujeres, the Island of Women, lies a short boat ride from Cancún, and a catamaran is the nicest way to get there. This catamaran Isla Mujeres tour turns the crossing into part of the day: a drink in hand, open sea around you, and a choice between a trip with a snorkelling stop or a relaxed sunset cruise.

The tour starts at a private marina in Cancún, which you reach by shuttle from your hotel. On board you can spend the half-hour crossing in the shade or out on the sunny deck, with a drink of your choice. Meanwhile the island slowly grows on the horizon. The morning and midday departures include snorkelling, whereas the sunset trip is built entirely around the evening light.

On the tours that include it, the catamaran stops at the Isla Mujeres Underwater National Park. On this catamaran Isla Mujeres tour the crew hands out the gear. You then head into clear water above coral formations and among tropical fish. The park belongs to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world. Because it is protected, the crew keeps the group off the coral itself and hands out life vests. Even weak swimmers can therefore take part. Afterwards the boat carries on to the island.

The catamaran docks at the north beach, where the crew serves traditional Mexican snacks and light refreshments right by the water. The catamaran Isla Mujeres stop lasts roughly two hours. Playa Norte is shallow far out, so it works well for families. You can take out a paddleboard at no extra cost, walk through the pedestrian zone downtown, or try one of the local ice cream shops. In other words, you decide how active the afternoon becomes.

The whole excursion takes about five and a half hours. The version with snorkelling leaves at 8:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m., while the sunset trip without snorkelling starts at 2:00 p.m. The price covers water, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks throughout. Children from about four years upwards can join, although slightly older children usually get more out of the day.

The day combines a relaxed sail, a snorkelling stop and a couple of hours on one of the best beaches in the region. Whether you want time in the water or simply the island atmosphere, one of the three departures fits. You can also browse our other excursions in Mexico.
