This Cobá tour is one of the most diverse day trips in the Riviera Maya region. Combining Cobá with a visit to Punta Laguna gives you history and adventure in a single day. First, you’ll explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Cobá deep in the jungle, then cool off in a cenote, followed by a typical Mexican lunch, and finally Punta Laguna awaits with ziplining and the chance to observe wild spider monkeys in their natural habitat.
Cobá is one of the few Mayan ruins in Mexico where you’re still allowed to climb the great pyramid Nohoch Mul. The archaeological site of Cobá is located deep in the dense jungle and is much more extensive than you’d expect at first glance. Many explore the grounds by bike or take a rickshaw between the various temple complexes of Cobá. Once you reach the top of the pyramid, you’ll look out over the treetops to the horizon, a view that makes the effort of the climb worthwhile.
After the humid heat among the ruins, a dip in one of the cenotes near Cobá is almost mandatory. These natural freshwater sinkholes are crystal clear and pleasantly cool, many hidden in caves or under open sky between roots and rocks. For most visitors, this Cobá moment is one of the highlights of the entire day.
Before continuing to Punta Laguna, there’s usually lunch at a small, locally-run restaurant. Fresh tacos, Cochinita Pibil, or chicken with rice and beans are often on the menu. This break is welcome after the morning in Cobá and gives a glimpse into Mexican cuisine away from the tourist centers.
The afternoon belongs to Punta Laguna, a nature reserve around a quiet lagoon deep in the jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula. Wild spider monkeys live here, and with a bit of patience and a local guide, you can observe them in the treetops—a real highlight for all animal lovers. If you prefer more action, you can also swing across the lagoon at Punta Laguna on several ziplines and get a bird’s-eye view of the water and surrounding forest. The combination of spider monkey sightings and the adrenaline rush of ziplining makes Punta Laguna one of the most exciting ways to end a day trip in the region.

If you prefer more action, you can swing across the lake at Punta Laguna on several ziplines. The routes run at considerable height directly over the water. You get an unobstructed view of the lagoon and the dense jungle all around—a quick adrenaline rush with a really beautiful view. The moment when you glide over the mirror-smooth water surface stays with many. Seeing only the lake and a few canoes below you is one of the day’s highlights. The combination of spider monkey sightings and ziplining over the lake makes Punta Laguna one of the most exciting ways to end a day trip in the region.
This Cobá tour shows several sides of the region at once: ancient Mayan history at the Cobá ruins, refreshing cenotes, good food, and finally thrills and wildlife watching in the jungle of Punta Laguna. This mix makes the day so diverse and creates lasting memories. Discover more tours in the Riviera Maya with expert guides.
