Coba Tulum private tour: pyramid, cenote and Caribbean just for you

The Coba Tulum private tour combines two Maya sites that could hardly be more different, and it does so without any other travellers. Cobá lies deep in the jungle, while Tulum sits on a cliff above the Caribbean Sea. In between there is a swim in a cenote and an authentic Mexican lunch. An English-speaking guide stays with your group all day.

What makes the private version different

On a private tour you set the pace. You decide where to linger and when to move on. Guide and vehicle belong to your group alone, so there is no waiting for strangers and no fixed meeting points. If you prefer the same route at a lower price in a small group, take a look at our Coba and Tulum day trip.

Cobá: Maya ruins between jungle and rainforest

First the Coba Tulum private tour heads to Cobá, once one of the largest Maya cities in the region and today surrounded by rainforest. The site is wide, so you explore it slowly on foot or by bicycle taxi along old paths between the ruins. At its centre stands the Nohoch Mul pyramid, one of the few in Mexico visitors may still climb. From the top the view reaches across a green sea of treetops. If you also want to see spider monkeys, our private Coba and Punta Laguna tour covers that. Background on the site comes from INAH, the Mexican heritage authority.

Cenote on the Coba Tulum private tour: a cool break in fresh water

After a morning among the ruins comes the jump into cool water. The water in these natural freshwater sinkholes is crystal clear and pleasantly fresh. That break makes the difference between an exhausting day and a great one. Because the tour belongs to your group alone, you stay in the water as long as you like.

Eating properly Mexican

At lunchtime the Coba Tulum private tour stops at a locally run restaurant. Instead of standard tourist fare, real Mexican cooking arrives at the table, the kind locals appreciate too. There are freshly made tacos, regional specialities and the matching salsas. This break rounds off the day and gives an honest taste of the region.

Tulum: the only Maya city by the sea

Maya ruins of Tulum above the Caribbean Sea on the Coba Tulum private tour

In the afternoon the tour continues to the coast. Tulum is the only known Maya city built directly by the sea. The ruins sit on a cliff above the Caribbean, which shines in a strong turquoise here. Unlike most Maya sites far inland, Tulum joins history and coast in a unique way. Between the well preserved temples and walls the view opens onto the water again and again. If you would rather combine Tulum with two cenotes, our private Tulum and cenotes tour does exactly that.

Who is the Coba Tulum private tour for?

If your time is limited, you get both faces of the Maya world in a single day: the jungle and the sea. A cenote and a lunch away from the tourist restaurants come on top. Because all admissions, hotel pickup and the English guided tour are included, you do not have to organise anything. Families and small groups of friends benefit most from the private version.
