This Holbox tour takes you to an island on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Although it is barely 42 kilometres long, it is one of the most popular destinations in Latin America. The reason is easy to see: there are no cars and no rush here, only colourful wooden houses, sandy streets and powder-white beaches. Therefore the day crosses the lagoon by boat, passes the two sister islands Isla Pájaros and Isla Pasión, and ends with a swimming stop, lunch in town and free time to explore. The island belongs to the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, a protected area of mangroves and lagoons.

The day begins with pickup at your hotel and the drive to Chiquilá, where you switch to the boat. From there the Holbox tour heads straight across the lagoon. Cars are banned on the island, so locals get around by bicycle or golf cart. Already on the crossing you can tell how calm and unspoiled this corner of Quintana Roo feels compared with the busier hotel zones further south. You can check the pickup times for your area on our hotel zones page.

First of all, the boat stops at Isla Pájaros, the bird island in the middle of the lagoon. Numerous species of water bird have settled here. With a bit of luck, dolphins accompany the boat on the way over, or flocks of flamingos appear in the shallow water. For nature lovers this first stop on the Holbox tour is often the most memorable moment of the whole day. Because the boat stays outside the nesting areas, the birds are not disturbed.

Next comes Isla Pasión, whose name says it all. Meanwhile the boat stays close to shore. Many travellers call this stop the highlight of the Holbox tour. Above all, the small island has shallow, crystal-clear water that invites you to linger. In addition, it gives a first taste of what makes Holbox special: powder-white sand and calm turquoise water as far as the eye can see.

Afterwards, following a swimming stop at one of the beaches, the Holbox tour continues to the town centre for lunch. Afterwards you have about an hour of free time. You can stroll through the sandy streets, look at the many graffiti artworks, or simply lie in one of the hammocks that stand directly in the water at several beaches. Finally, in the early afternoon it is back to Chiquilá and on to the hotel.

The day shows why the island counts among Mexico’s most beautiful destinations: a boat ride through the lagoon, two very different sister islands, a swim in warm water and a relaxed afternoon in a car-free village. Mainly water birds, because the island is a nesting site. With a bit of luck, dolphins swim alongside the boat, and flamingos appear depending on the season.
A small island with shallow, crystal-clear water. Therefore it is a calm place to swim. It is a good place to linger and a preview of the powder-white sand on Holbox itself.
A swimming stop at one of the beaches, lunch in the town centre and roughly an hour of free time. The group never exceeds twelve people, and water is included.
