A trip to Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas leads to the north of Yucatán, to one of the quietest destinations in the region. That’s largely because it lies so far off the usual tourist routes. On this trip the Rio Lagartos flamingos are the main draw. The day leads through a small fishing village and by boat through the mangroves. Afterwards come the famous pink lagoons of Las Coloradas, and finally lunch right by the water.
Arriving in Rio Lagartos already feels like stepping into another world. Salty air, colorful houses, and the gentle rocking of boats in the harbor welcome visitors. From the waterfront promenade, you look out over the mangroves, and with a bit of luck, the first crocodiles already appear in the shallow water. After the often multi-hour drive, this first moment by the water feels especially valuable, exactly the calm you hope for on a day in Rio Lagartos.
The heart of this Rio Lagartos excursion is a boat tour through the mangrove forests. Meanwhile the boat glides quietly through clear water, past densely rooted mangroves that are home to countless species. In addition, flamingos, pelicans and other birds trace their paths over the waterways, while crocodiles bask in the sun along the banks. Above all, the boat captain knows the channels like the back of his hand. Along the way, he explains which bird species you’re seeing and why the mangroves are so important to the whole ecosystem.

Next come the pink lagoons of Las Coloradas, a short drive from the Rio Lagartos flamingos on the coast of Yucatán. However, their striking colour comes from a high concentration of salt and microorganisms, creating a sight that feels almost surreal. The drive passes through stark, flat landscape before the lagoons open up in various shades of pink and violet. Depending on the light and salt content, they appear more or less intense. Meanwhile white salt deposits line the shores, looking almost like snow from a distance. As a result, this contrast is what makes Las Coloradas one of the most photographed places in the region.
To close the day out, lunch awaits right by the water, a short drive from the Rio Lagartos flamingos. Usually the kitchen serves fresh fish from the Gulf of Mexico, accompanied by local spices and flavors. Therefore, in the shade of palm trees and overlooking the harbour, you can wind down the day in a relaxed atmosphere. After that, it’s back to the coast.
A trip to Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas shows a side of Yucatán that many travelers otherwise miss. In short, it includes the Rio Lagartos flamingos, crocodiles up close and the pink lagoons. Anyone seeking pure nature and willing to make the longer drive will be rewarded. This Rio Lagartos excursion is one of the most impressive day trips in the whole Riviera Maya.
